An airsoft gun is a replica firearm that shoots BBs, also known as plastic pellets. It does this either by using compressed gas or a spring-driven piston. Airsoft was invented in Japan in the late 1970s, because firearms were banned from civilian ownership. The goal of airsoft was to closely replicate real guns. Today, the guns and sports are used by all ages. Many of the airsoft guns are produced in Japan and China although the sale and distribution of them are restricted. The United States, Taiwan, and the Philippines are also producers.

Owning airsoft guns is legal in almost every country in the world. Exceptions include: Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. These guns are usually used for fun, but can be harmful. Therefore, in the United States, you must be 18 years or older to purchase and airsoft gun.

If a look-alike gun is used in a crime, the individual or individuals will be treated as they were going to use an actual firearm. To be safe, you should treat these guns as if they were real firearms, and minors should be supervised.
